Job Overview

The supervisor's primary role is the management of a technical team working within the Animal House Facility.

The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring In Vivo studies are performed in accordance with client/regulatory requirements and that the highest standards of leadership and animal welfare are maintained. The Supervisor is required to maintain a high level of technical competency /study knowledge and to perform regulated procedures under UK legislation.

The position is based at a single site although some interaction with counterparts at other sites may be expected.

Leadership and development

To effectively lead and develop a technical team responsible for conducting In Vivo studies and for providing technical resource required within AH Ops.

To ensure performance reviews (probationary and PMD's) are conducted in accordance with company procedures. Ensure that challenging/relevant Covance Driven and Development objectives are set and that additional guidance/support is available for anyone failing to meet with expectations.

To provide regular coaching/feedback for all reportees, ensure the personal development/training of direct reportees is planned/conducted in accordance with business goals, induction schedules and individual development requirements.

In conjunction with relevant line manager monitor the progress/performance of all individuals and ensure consistent recognition/career progression.

To ensure that Talent reviews are conducted for all direct reportees.

To ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and in particular, those relating to Animal Welfare, GLP and Health & Safety.

To ensure that all team members are trained to achieve the standards of competence as outlined in their job description, Company Policy and Procedures (P&P's) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).

To ensure time, overtime and traveling expenses are authorised for all direct reports in accordance with company policy.

Adherence to Company Policies and Procedures (P&P's) and general Animal House processes – holiday booking, sickness reporting, code of conduct, security considerations/procedures.

To ensure that regular team meetings are held to discuss Study progress, Facility procedures, Quality, Health and Safety and any other departmental or Company communications.

If required, to conduct investigatory hearings and chair formal disciplinary meetings.

To participate in the Recruitment/Selection process and conduct animal unit tours for prospective team members.

Resources

Ensure all allocated studies are effectively scheduled and performed in accordance with study protocols/schedules/SOP's and that all resources are effectively and efficiently utilized.

When required, draw up overtime rotas that ensure all weekend/public holiday and out of hours work is performed according to study protocol and departmental SOP's.

As required, fulfill the role of responsible supervisor on a weekend/bank holiday.

To monitor staffing levels and requirements, liaise with other TL's and to advise the line manager of any potential problems regarding future requirements or skills sets and recommend appropriate action.

To establish and maintain a skills matrix for all staff that identifies technical skills and Experience in each species. Develop and implement plans to ensure that staff are fully trained in order to meet the different types of study identified on the proposal register.

General

To be part of the client tour team within the animal house that is responsible for the conduct of client monitor visits, ensuring feedback is recorded and communicated to all members of the Department

To investigate CAIR and non conformity issues, when requested conduct formal investigations. In conjunction with line manager assist in the resolution of CAIR issues and implementation of corrective actions.

Provide responses to client, facility and regulatory inspections.

To ensure that the facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards and that staff are aware of facility maintenance and metrology procedures.

To prepare and review departmental SOP's and Risk Assessments.

To liase with Quality Assurance (QA) in the resolution of issues raised in QA audits for procedures or reports. To respond constructively to QA audits and implement suitable corrective actions to ensure errors do not re-occur.

To participate in the Ethical review process and (if requested) undertake the responsibilities of Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer.

The role may involve leading a team in any area of the animal facility.

To perform any other task as may be reasonably requested

Education / Qualifications

Educational standard may include an Institute of Animal Technology qualification, a relevant BTEC National/Higher National Diploma or relevant degree.

The post holder must have successfully held a Home Office Personal Licence for at least 5 years and will be able to competently perform regulated procedures ideally on both small and large animals.

The post holder will be expected to actively develop and expand their technical skills.

The Post Holder will hold Home Office Licence Modules 1-3 (module 4 desirable).

The Post Holder may have completed the Covance pre-leadership development training course and will continue training in Supervisory/Management skills eg. completion of the Covance STEPS training program.

It is required that the Post Holder will actively manage his or her own continued professional and career development.

The Post Holder may maintain the position of Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO).

Experience

The post holder would be expected to have at least five years Experience working within an animal facility and will have at least three years supervisory Experience .

The Post Holder is expected to demonstrate a high level of competence in relation to supervisory and management.

It is envisaged that the post holder will actively lead process improvement activities . A trained greenbelt or Experience of leading process improvement activities is desirable but not essential.

It is desirable that the post holder has Experience of specialist techniques, for example surgery, continuous infusion or DART.
